Well, if we don't get blow to bits we have a chance. If they don't get too many boarders onto the Maiden we have chance. If the Maiden manages to return and pick us up we have a chance..."

Max smiles as Silon continues the conversation. After Silon ends his chuckle, Maxi speaks:

"At least you have met them before and overcome. All I know is that no two insurgencies are identical. This situation has certain outcomes and I find comfort in that. No long scrutinizes afterward, no worries finding out who did wrong and when, no second thought about our Protector's will."

Maxi and Silon has dropped by the launch bay to look rover a few things, and Silon takes the opportunity to add some of his own observations.

"I've fought orks in space and I've also had the misfortune to be shot down over ork-controlled territory. Incidentally both happened over Kulth, though I imagine that it happened long after your were there Vern?

I found orks to be indifferent space fighters. But on the ground its another ball game. I'm not exaggerating if I say that orks need to see their opponents and feel the bullets zipping by; otherwise their heart is not in it.

But as I said, on the ground they are different. I'd play down the suicidal bit though. They are not like ants or other insects that mindlessly march into enemy territory. Orks are intelligent, and if they can they will use their equipment, their numbers, and their tactics - however simple - to good effect.

In fact, I found them good at adapting to the situation at hand. And they can be tricksy at times - had a few play dead, and once - this was after I got back to our own lines - an ork sniper hid inside the dead body of a larger ork. Took a while to figure that one out."

He laughs a little at the memory. Haxtes would rather that he went away. Or maybe something really heavy could just fall on his head? You know its his untouchable genes screwing you, but you can't help it.
