3.2 Liberation of Zephyr

by DM B

Castor takes his host to the planet Zephyr in the 6th Circle of Finial, the very same world he tricked into giving up a few squads of Sisters, years ago. There isn't much of a challenge in space, but the ground battle is quite protracted, and the final assault on the Sister's monastery-fortress costly in terms of lives (especially Daughters and Brethren Warrior and Cult Troops). There is some general looting and the planet is emptied of people - to repopulate Diamantina, which has died due to a visitation of the Tyrant Star.

Castor find proof that this planet was walked by Lorgar, long ago. Long before his other visit to the area in M39, when he started the cults out in the Calixis sector. In addition to some text fragemtns, Castor finds a stately golden cloak and a crown, suitable for a woman (but definitely not an Astartes master). The teenage boy Sigismund is found in the possession of the Sisters. Captain Anaximander (who has infiltrated, acting as a Tiger Argent) prevents Sister Salt's execution order from being carried out.

3.1 Sack of Gunpoint

by DM B

The 10th attacks, defeats, and pillages the minor hive world of Gunpoint on the spinward fringes of the Hazeroth subsector. This is the attack that transforms the 10th from a ramshackle affair, always short of supplies and spare part, into something akin to a viable long-term raiding force. The loot is divided amongst the fleet, the host, Diamantina and the Consovor base.

3.0 Preparations

by DM B

Following the battle of Karrik there is a long period during which the 10th and 34th Hosts hang around Diamantina, licking their wounds, repairing, and gathering new forces. There is a lot of stuff going on within the Host and inside Calixis, but it does not involve mighty fleet battles or planetary invasions.

The 34th Host eventually leaves for greener pastures, but new allies appear: Baphomet and a force of Black Legionnaires and Task Tak with his Death Guards. The Death Guards agree to take on the Hazeroth front, the Black Legion the Josian Reach, leaving Castor and the 10th to cover the Markayn Marches, the region closest to both Consovor and Diamantina.

Carriers and wings

by DM B

We assume that ships with small craft have both deep space small craft (Furies, Starhawks, and Sharks) and aerospace craft (i.e Lightnings, Thunderbolts, and Marauders) on board. Since launch facilities are different and aerospace craft are much smaller and less space-intensive, there is little to be gained by trying to convert between the two types. The only exception would be for an all-aerospace ground support platform; it would be useless in space, but good for supporting the grunts on the ground.

There is one 'wing' per point of small craft. The number of craft in a wing varies; typcially between twenty and forty (2-5 squadrons). Aerospace wings typically have more craft than the equivalent deep space formation.

Daughters of the Word Covens

by Apostle Castor

Coven of the Blessed Maiden: The most special Coven in the Host. They recruit only from the captured sisters of battle, from the ones that can't take their new life of abuse and slavery, the ones that listen to the voices in the dark, the ones that make a pact to get out of bondages. They get out, true, but their soul pays a heavy price for freedom, they become posessed by a Deamonette of Slaanesh, forever bound to service to the Daughters and the Apostle.

BATTLE COVENS

Coven of the Poisoned Chalice: The Poisoned Chalice is one of the support Covens, assigned to work as a combined arms team, alongside astartes, armoured formations, titans, brotherhood warriors, aerospace assets, and so forth. The Poisoned Chalice is equipped with (light) PA and come equipped with an over-abundance of melta weapons (although there are never eunuch to meet their needs).

Coven of the Bleeding Heart: Sister Coven to the Poisoned Chalice. Due to a shortage of melta weapons the Bleeding Heart must make do with other heavy weapons - missile launchers, lascannons, heavy bolters, and the like. Which is quite all right with the Domaina, as she greatly prefers killing at long range.

Coven of the Divine Will: The Coven of the Divine Will are Sepharims, Daughters equipped with flight packs. They are armed for close quarters combat and tasked with supporting the assault Marines. The death toll is quite high, compared to other Covens.

Coven of the Rendered Soul: The Broken Dreams support the the main host in battle (equivalent of regular SoBs).

Coven of the Broken Dreams:  The Broken Dreams support the the main host in battle (equivalent of regular SoBs). Under Domina Cassandra they've picked up some infiltration skills as well.

Coven of the Prima Filia: The Prima Filia is ship security. Divided amonst the ships of the fleet, the Verbum included.

OTHER COVENS

Coven of the Brides of Samus: Infiltrators.

Coven of the Angelic touch: Apothecaries.

Coven of the Spiked Fist: Drivers/enginseers from the Host's growing number of vehicles.

Coven of the Astral Harpy: Fighter and bomber pilots needed to crew the growing number of small craft in the fleet.

The Crow Father

by DM B

The Crow Father is a daemonic entity of great antiquity, a dark presence that has stalked the galaxy long before Man started digging in the dirt and making little mud houses. It is a parasitic entity that revels in death and destruction, for it is in the aftermath of great calamity that it prospers the most: It delights in pecking away what little remains to those who believe they have lost everything. When all hope and life has fled, it will gleefully pick at the bones and souls of its victims. In a galaxy filled with conflict and hardship there is no shortage of delights for the Crow Father - but he's not above engineering things to be more to his liking.

The 10th Host knows the Crow Father as the (former) patron of the raptor cult - and of course as the great, black wall that protects the so-called Imperial loyalists from directs sorcerous, or daemonic assault. So much for the 'purity' of the enemy. Neither Lorgar nor any of the Deacons have mentioned the Crow Father in particular. There are some indications that Samus may have had dealings with this entity in the past, but getting Samus to comment is notoriously difficult (and you don't really want Samus himself to be the man next to you).

Blight-master Task Tak

by DM B

Blight-master (a rank akin to Chapter MAster, Apostle, etc.) Task Tak leads the hordes of Nurgle in the Calixis sector.

This venerable Astartes is birth-brother to Sis Tak, the venerable dreadnought that serves Castor (the fact is not widely known, but Castor sees and hears many things). For two Terran borthers to both become marines, let alone marines of two different Legions is very rare indeed. If there were others they are almost certainly long gone by now, making the Tak brothers something unique.

Deacons of the Word

by DM B

The Primarch Lorgar didn't really spend 10,000 years sitting around, doing nothing much but write. In reality he went on quite a few pilgrimages to gain knowledge and inspiration. He would then return to Sicarus to write. The Primarch went out among the heathens on the fringes of Segmentum Obscurus around the time of the Angevin Crusade (he may also have gone there once before, in hallowed antiquity, but that's another story). This is know, for Castor has uncovered cults dedicated to Chaos and the Word on numerous worlds.

The priests of this faith are called Deacons of the Word, and they preach various variations over the same creed: Respect Chaos, placate the gods, Lorgar is the Man, his Sons are the avenging angels of the gods, they will help tear down the Imperium and build a new society. One built upon faith, and faith alone. Castor has integrated the Deacons with his fleet and host; the deacons are his priests among the mortal population. They are an important element in the infiltration work - without the prior existence of these cults the job of sneaking into Calixis would have been next to impossible (or at least much more difficult - and its already quite challenging!).

Balphomael - The Horned Darkness

by DM B

Castor's many diviners, sorcerers, and witches have uncovered proof that the Calixis sector is home to an extraordinarily powerful Chaos entity:  Balphomael, the Horned Darkness

Whether you want to call it an unbelievably powerful daemon or a minor god is debatable. In terms of influence in the local area (Calixis in particular, and to a lesser extent neighbouring sectors and territories) he is definitely god-like. It is believed that this daemon have been part of Calixian mythology and religious life for as long as there have been people out here. Around 20.000 years in other worlds. As far as your librarium and templum can determine the entity is not so keen on breaking through into reality, but rather more focused on creation cults and gaining worshippers.

The Broken Angel has a small, abandoned shrine that may have been dedicated to Balphomael once. There is also a very brief mention of a horned darkness  in a fragment of Lorgar's writings, so the Primarch may have encountered it or its minions during his great pilgrimage. The writings of the proto-deacons are rather more interesting: They mention the Horned Darkness as a power to be placated, but not worshipped. Various holy texts go on to explain that the Horned Darkness is an insidious and jealous thing, prone to subverting the faith of those that interact with it (which isn't good as he deacons Lorgar inspired were to worship chaos undivided, not a single daemon-deity).

Note: Balphomael is not the same entity as the wicked Crow Father!

Domina Angelica Palantina, Arch mistress of the divine will coven.

by Apostle Castor

Angelica Palantina is a nom de guerre, all Daughters take them as a mockery of the names borne by the sisters of battle. But the name of angel is well suited to her, among the most beautiful women, pale of skin and red of hair, a color that match er fiery zeal.

Angelica was one of the first Daughters that Arch Domina Kimery recruited from the below-decks of the Bringer of faith. She was fierce, almost feral child, that's how she survived the hard conditions of the slave decks.

Difficult to control then and granted the Arch Domina has beaten some of that out of her, she has a eye for potential that made her keep at it with the ungrateful and feisty Angelica, beatings and prayer aside Angelica remains fierce (but less independent) to this day.

Angelica rose true the ranks of the Daughters, and early showed a nack for attacking up close with the neck braking speeds the jump pack offered. She leads her Daughters in support of the Assault Astardes. She knows is and leads the elites of the Daughters and acts accordingly.

Black Legion (ex. Sons of Horus, ex. Luna Wolves)

by DM B

Founding: 1st (M30). No successors.

Primarch: Horus (Deceased)

Affiliation: Chaos Undivided

Original homeworld: Cthonia (destroyed)

Current homeworld: None

Organization: Originally known as the Luna Wolves. Renamed in honour of the great Warmaster. Widely regarded as the best Legion overall, with plenty of strengths and no particular weaknesses. Took the name Black Legion after Horus' death. The bulk of the BL now serves Abaddon the Despoiler (aka. Ezekiel the Just).

Chaplain Tol Amar

by DM B

Chaplain Tol Amar is the quintessential Word Bearer. Charismatic, skilled, and cunning. Brave in battle, skilled as a leader. Ambitious, but loyal to his master. Contemplative and visionary at the same time. Tol Amar may be among the most ambitious of Castor's acolytes, but he's also one of the few that show real promise. If Castor wanted someone (which he don't) to forge a Host of their own - or succeed him - Tol Amar might be such a one.

Tol Amar hails from Sicarus, but he lacks the pure Colchisian blood that is so popular among the upper echelons. Instead he's an orphan of dubious parentage, a survivor that clung to life and climbed up the temple stairs, one painful step at the time.

Venerable Dreadnought Sis Tak

by DM B

Sis Tak is perhaps the most venerable Word Bearer dreadnought there is. At the very least he's one of the oldest. He started life as a Terran, got drafted for the Great Crusade, and was a veteran long before Lorgar was found. Mortally wounded in battle, he was among the first Astartes to be entombed within a Dreadnought. When the 10th Chapter (now Host) was formed he was added to the roster to bring experience, wisdom - and firepower to the fledgeling Chapter. Sis Tak spends most of his days slumbering and meditating. He's fairly sane and a source of much wisdom. He also has the ear of many of the older veterans.

Coryphaeus Imran Dhral

by DM B

Imran Dhral is a native of Sicarus, a man from one of the proud Colchisian pureblood families. He served as Captain of the 3rd Company under Obel Gar. He emerged as the best leader and strategos during the post-Samson war games. If he can be said to have any weaknesses it is a lack of personal battle prowess (relatively speaking - he a match for any veteran or sergeant in the Host, just not up there with the best of the best). He's actually above average when it comes to faith and zeal, but he never lets it get in the way of his duties as Coryphaeus, which tends to confuse some of the less illuminated brethren. It is perhaps also hard for him to shine in the preacher department when he's so close to Castor.

Chaplain Hiram "Flayer" Salicar

by Apostle Castor

Chaplain Salicar or the flayer as he is know in the 10th Host, he came to the host on the shrineship "Broken Angel" where he served as chaplain  and he keept that job in the 10th. Hiram has truly blomed in the service of the 10th, where he has grown in power and mastery of the word, and he has recived gifts form the gods to match.

Hiram is the chaplain for the 20th coy where he is a fine balance to the captains "new" and "inovative" ways of doing things.

The Flayer is old school and is the arch type of how the empire of man view a WB chaplain. He dilivers his litanis and ceremons with cold hatred, the venom drips(litiraly as he as a mutation in that Astardes gland)when he speaks. His skin is old and streched like ancient pargament. His eys are red and yellow and he has poison dripping fangs in his mouth. On his bald head a number of horn resembeling bone growts has started to apear. He flays is war victims and use the skin as pargamet to wirte pasages of the holy word for his company and to make cloaks for him self and the champions of fait in the 20th.

A little know fact is that Chaplain Salicar also provide the Apostel with hand made human/posthuman skin pargament. Almost all the apostels writings are made on skin that the Flayer has lovingly prepaired.(a fact that he takes emence personal and private pride inn). The remains of the victims are renerd down to, fats and oils, some made into candels other parts given to the 10th  Hosts sorceres as spell/ritual ingridiants, as a old school chaplain he lives by the waste not want not maxim.
