Ignorance is Bliss - Lost in the Warp

by DM B

Timestamp: 7.158.996.M41

Location: Free trader vessel Maiden of Golgenna, somewhere in the Immaterium

Situation: Aboard the Maiden of Golgenna, drifting without power in the Immaterium, destruction imminent

Body: The Master and Commander of the Maiden of Golgenna is dead, as are many members of the already understrength crew. The ship has suffered some damage, but nothing catastrophic. Except of course the fact that the power core remains idle. Jax and the remaining crew members have managed to get a few additional generators online and have manually shut down several sections of the ship, giving you a little more power. The remaining parts of the ship only has very limited power - emergency lighting and the bare minimum of life support.

Total field collapse has been postponed, but auxiliary power units cannot maintain warp field integrity forever - once the capacitator banks have been depleted the field will fail and with it the bubble of reality that surrounds the Maiden. Once that occurs you are done for. The psykers among you find that the thought of this happening fill them with irrational fear.

Poor Odessa is especially affected and you've been forced to sedate her - heavily. She remains in the medbay, tended by Vern and one of Xerza's servitors - which apparently has advanced medical progamming. She's been stabilized, but Vern's prognosis for her isn't good. She needs care beyond what can be given in the Maiden's meagre facilities (Jax, ever helpful, points out that 'back in the old days' the medicae-bay was fully stocked).

Regarding Vern - turns out that one of his areas of expertise is medicine - the man is a fully trained surgeon, well versed in treating combat injuries. Seems he spent a few years as a senior medicae for a Guard Regiment and then served abaord a Navy vessel - the man is full of surprises! He's injured himself, but with the aid of the medicae servitor he's manged to patch himself up fairly well.

Ignace, though calm, no longer manages to suppress his hidden mutation. From time to time the strange quills that cover his head and arms spring forth, giving him an alien mien. Its quite disturbing to the crew so he's been confined to the medicae-bay. That givens him the opportunity to watch over Odessa, which seems to clam him a bit. Not sure what would happen to him should she die - most likely he would have a breakdown.

Silon has been medicated and put back to work. He really should be resting his eyes rather than risk further damage to them, but since he's about the only officer with naval experience still on board (alive that is), there is need of him on the bridge. With help from the survivors of the bridge incident (thankfully there were unconscious during the entire 'Captain Claw' affair) and the off-shift, he's trying to get the command deck up and running again.

Jarra and Haxtes are both undergoing surgery. Each has sustained multiple serious injuries, and Haxtes in particular has taken way too many stimms and detox shots. Vern is certain that they both will make a full recovery. Jarra's injuries might be very severe, but she has an almost unnatural constitution.  Haxtes has numerous lesser injuries, but only his shattered shoulder is a major and complicated wound . Its his chemical abuse that it the main problem, and Vern has to flush his system thoroughly.

With the captain dead Jax now has full command authority over all systems, allowing him to give the Inquisition full control over the vessel. Venus has recovered from the gas attack and is hard at work,  trying to compel the ship's machine spirit to resume normal operations. She's oblivious to this world, her four extra metal limbs extended (she reminds you of a spider) and physically interfaced into the innards of the energarium. Will she manage to get the systems up gain in time to prevent the warp-field from falling apart? You have no Magos aboard and most of the engineering crew is dead, so there is no question about doing any manual restarts. It all comes down to Venus.

Xerza has retreated to her quarters to continue her warding trance. Something to do with the failing warp-fields. That leaves Maxi as the only member of your team not fully preoccupied with either work or being patched together. Xerza has ordered him to keep an eye on things and manage as best he can - but until power is back on you are not to disturb her unless Horus himself comes knocking. Or rather, whenever Haxtes and/or Jarra comes around you are to escort them directly to Xerza. They are not to delay and they are not to speak to anyone.

Anyway, even should you manage to restore power, which is a prerequisite for getting out of the Immaterium (the translation requires vast amounts of power) you have more problems. Where are you and how will you get to Sephereis? If you are very lucky the ship might still be right there in the current, heading where it is supposed to be going. If you are not so fortunate you've been thrown of course, and will be stranded without a Navigator to guide you. You'll get back to civilization eventually, but its going to be a lengthy and slow journey.

And the question remains; WHY did the captain do what he did? Jax describes him as cowardly and completely out of his league, but why would he want to kill himself and destroy the ship and all aboard it in this fashion?

Max's gathers Ignace and Jax for a brief meeting in the Med bay area. "I have gathered us because we'll be acting as a 'Chiefs of security triumvirate'. * Ignace, you are responsible for the Med bay and act as liason for Lady Xerza and Vern. Remember to bring Jerra and Haxtes to her when they wake up. * Chief, as this vessel's 'chief of security', you are responsible for all other areas and act as liason for the crew and us. And make sure that Silon as acting captain and Venus as acting magos have all their needs met. Venus has priority, even if Silion as captain have ship seniority. * I'll act as the Chief's off duty chief. But my main task is to investigate and secure evidence about the former captain." "And remember to speak of Silon and Venus as 'Captain Silon of the Inquisition' and 'Magos Venus of the Inquisition'. It should help the morale among the crew."

When Haxtes awakens, he goes to his room and reequip and rearm, after that he goes to the mistress too get his brain/soul scan. He does not interact with the others except if they try and stop him or block him. His response will be final and violent if needed. "Through the destruction of our enemies do we gain our salvation."

That is the way it would have been - in an ideal work. This, however, is the real world. Haxtes is in no particular shape to do anything when he wakes. He feels bloated and completely unfit. Vern explains: "You've been in an artificial coma-like stat for two days now while I flushed your system for chemicals. You are clean now, but you still have a lot of fluid in your body; you weigh in at 215 pounds right now...but it should stabilize over the next few days. The servitor here will help you over in the wheelchair and push your where you need to go. And Jarra is coming along as well. She's not in much of a shape either, but she conscious and she's not leaking vital fluids anymore so she can come."

Meanwhile Maxi has gathered physical evidence and interviewed witnesses. The crew never actually noticed anything was amiss with the captain. He was always an odd sort and they never really liked him in the first place. To the bridge and energarium crew he just said that your were attempting to take over the ship, that you were some sort of agents out to kill everyone and seize the vessel. The crew responded accordingly. As for that final fight on the bridge - the six surviving crew (two are still in the medicae-bay with violent spasms) from that incident were all unconscious before the final fight between Haxtes and the captain. Every recording of what transpired on the bridge also fails to reveal any details. Just before the final crash the pict systems had some sort of failure, and even after image processing (which you're quite good at) you can only see the blurry outlines of Haxtes and the captain fighting. The audio pickup is a little better. You can hear the whole fight. Not a lot is said though, so its mostly sounds of fighting. Towards the end there is more interference, almost as if there was another recording overlaid with the one you're hearing. You can make out Haxtes screaming something like 'Kaela Mensha Khaine' near the end. Doesn't sound Gothic at all. Possibly some Death Cult nonsense. And the one line by the captain at the end; 'Curse you to Hell bit...'. The last bit is revealed to be 'bitch' after some extrapolation software is run. Odd to be calling Haxtes 'bitch' no? From the intonation markers you can tell that it was a reference to someone female. Anyway, you've also found the captain's personal log. But it's keyed to his gene-markers so you can access it.

Jarra walks beside you, dragging along a wheeled rack with several bags of fluids attached. She doesn't look too good either :) Xerza greets you as you enter. "What happened on the bridge stays to the bridge. You are not to talk to anyone about it. Not even other members of the Inquisition. You don't have the clearance to know what you now know - normally you would have been executed for it. But that is not going to happen - unless you start blabbering. So just keep it to yourself. The captain was possessed by a warp entity. You've probably heard dark rumors to that effect and simply put they are all true - and worse. The Immaterium is largely empty or filled with weirdness, but there is also sentience there. And some of that sentience takes the form of what is commonly called daemons. Some of these daemons long to enter reality and inflict harm. That cannot be allowed; which is why we have the Ordo Malleus. It is their job to deal with such things. Our job is to make sure it doesn't come to that - by stopping them from gaining a foothold in reality at all. As far as I can tell the captain was an unregistered psyker. And it it through such as he that daemons can enter reality. By possessing them. The Hereticus should have picked him up before and sent him to the Black Ships, but that didn't happen and this was the result. If you survive your service with me, you will see that again. And other things much worse. Questions?

Maxi briefs Silon with his findings with Jax present on the bridge area. He afterward briefs Venus at the enginarium, especially mention the captains diary asking for her help when she is free from working on the machine. (But he insist it‘s not a high priority for her.) Finally he speaks to Vern and Ignace at the Med bay area. He then finishes a report with any input from his fellow acolytes and Jax and hope to present it to Xerza when either Haxtes or Jerra is brought to her.

Jax is captain now as far as the ship's security protocols are concerned - when the captain died, he automatically assumed that role. So being the captain the captain's personal log belongs to HIM now, meaning he can unlock whatever it was Corben entered into it. So you don't actually need Venus' aid - which is good, since she's busy. She does, however, mention that she helped Haxtes gain access to the ship's log earlier on, but she could not open the captain's personal files. You spend many hours reading the log. It is clear from the onset that Corben hates being under warp drive. Indeed, the reason why he was never part of his father's journeys was that he as a child went on several trips, which did no good to his mental and physical health. So he retired to the planet Quaddis, where he spent the bulk of his life - up until assuming command. Seems that his father had put conditions into his will; that unless he take command, the ship and all his father's assets would be forfeit. Basically he had no choice. Go into space or become a pauper; not a welcome prospect when you've lived in opulence all your days on Quaddis. From the log you also glean that he after a while almost deliberately put of key crew members, until he only had a skeleton cadre around him. Perhaps he through that if the ship didn't make a profit then he could retire to Quaddis again. But then he'd be ruined again. It doesn't make sense. Or perhaps not deliberately - at least not in a conscious fashion. The entries become scarcer towards the end, and less coherent. Perhaps his mind broke and insanity took over. That he subconsciously sought to end his own life as he could bear it no longer? One last item; he took to writing poetry. Simple pieces at first, but then more elaborate. You're not into poetry yourself, but you can tell that especially the later pieces have special quality. Maybe Vern would appreciate them more.

(So a spoiled brat unfit for his father’s throne finally loosed his marbles by having an inquisition cadre aboard. He would have lost his mind finally but Lady Xerza's presence just popped the top open sooner and spilled out all his insignificances.) Max writes his finding that the whole mess is just a mad captain in his finished brief for Xerza. He gives Silon and Vern notice to read the captains journey since Xerza undoubtly wants second opinions. And he also asks Vern if there where any traces of drugs or combat stimms in the body remains of the captain. It could be one of the explanations how he lasted so long in battle against Haxtes and Jarra 'the bitch'. (As he called her.) Another is that Haxtes and Jerra was heavily wounded thus prolonging the fight.

Silon reads your report. He doesn't have much to add, but there is one thing: "I've seen this before. Warp-madness. Its not common as such, but on a major Navy vessels there are thousands of crew, perhaps even tens of thousands. And from time to time insanity gets someone; which is why crew watch each other of signs of madness and why security is so tight while under drive. Never heard of the captain going insane before; but it sort of makes sense. As a Rogue Trader captain he's above and beyond any scrutiny from his own men. Master and Commander and all that. And you're right, our presence probably pushed him over the edge." Vern: "I would be inclined to agree with Silon save for one thing. These poems. I've seen some of these passages before. On another ship, but under similar circumstances. It cannot be a coincidence; there must be more to this than meets the eye. Oh, and the captain's body was never taken to the medicae-bay, so I haven't given it an autopsy. Even if Haxtes blew him up with a krak grenade there should be something left."

Maxi checks around for the whereabouts of the captain remains. Because he's pretty sure they aren't on the bridge. Who where first on bridge after the combat and who brought Jerra and Haxtes to the Med Bay? (Damn what a rookie mistake, when securing evidence of a dead person ALWAYS secure the body.)
11/28/09 @ 18:37
Comment from:
You're not entirely sure what happened on the bridge after the captain died. The bridge pickups went dead for a while. Some checking reveals that some of Xerza's savants and/or servitors were the first to arrive. They moved Jarra and Haxtes and retrieved Venus. There is absolutely no record of where the captain's body went. None at all. As if it simply creased to exits.

Maximilian ends his investigation. He asks Jax that the captain's cabin remain locked and inaccessible to anyone until Lady Xerza gives permission. He helps Jax, Vern and Silion in anything they ask. But mainly heads Jax off shift. To kill time he studies the ships log to make a profile of Captain Corben. And he spends time with Silon and Vern in their usual evening conversations. He starts his day with exercising down at the armory and ends it with a maintenance sermon of his equipment by his bed. This evening prayer brings Max to his most spiritual mood of the day and is a ritual he will forsake sleep for if his days get stretched.

Xerza, still in her quarters, quickly looks through your report before setting it aside for later reading. "The captain's remains were removed by my servitors. They are currently in stasis-storage. You need not concern yourself with them. Instead you will focus on profiling the captain I am assuming that he was a low-key psyker that was never identified by the Ordo Hereticus. At some point during his life a seed was sown - the seed of corruption. From your report it looks like it might have been an early warp journey, but my instincts tell me that is not so. Under his father's command this ship was as well-maintained as any Navy ship-of-the-line. And the ship's warp-screens and hexagramatic wards leave nothing to be desired. No, it might have happened during a journey, but not because of faulty wards. The goal is to find out when the captain first became infected with warp-madness. Then you'll need to profile him, in particular aiming at tracking the progress of his corruption and insanity. Also - Venus has informed that she'll need to do a system-wide purge of the ship's systems; the cogiation core seems most reluctant to do as she wants, going as far as to actively resits her attempt as restoring primary power. She has decided to isolate the core from the rest of the vessel and do a full purge and a local reboot of key systems. Make sure she has all the aid she needs; getting power back online has the highest priority. Any action or collateral is acceptable." Questions?" The word 'any' has a special taste to it; you get the feeling that 'any' really has no limits.

As Maxi makes his way to the energarium to speak with Venus something happens; you can feel the low hum of the power core as it comes back online. Its like life returning to a dead body; the main lighting panels spring to life, fresh air pours forth, and heaters start working on bringing warmth back to the living areas and workspaces. Venus must have found a way! Edit: Changed HAXTES to MAXI. My bad.

'Xerza conversation': "I want to mention that I closed the investigation when all my loose ends pointed at the Inquisition. As it is the standard procedure in any Adeptus Arbites investigation. And no questions need answered as I except to be informed of what I need when I need it." 'On his way to the engenarium as the system is tuning on': (Boils of soddery, nobody tells me nothing) Maxi talk to Jax on comm: "Chief, have you received any notice that the power would turn on?" Maxi respond to any answer: "We are not prepared, who knows what kind of traps and system malfunctions that still are in the machine. I request that we go to full alert." Max moves hasty to the enginarium and seek Venus.

Jax: "No Sir. I was making ready for the tedious business of cutting the hardlines to the cogitator core. Then suddenly power cam back online. Must be Venus found some trick. Clever lady that one." Silong responds to your call and brings the ship to red alert/action station (such as they are). Once down in the energarium you find Venus still engaged with the vessel, but she spares you enough attention to run a normal conversation: "I must say I am somewhat surprised. My earlier work suggested that I was not about to be able to cajole the ship to compliance...then I suddenly found some openings and - although I was not very hopeful beforehand - the vessel responded like a well-bred lady." One of her metal limbs affectionately touches a machine casing, deftly closing an open panel, another metal limb fastening it securely without the use of tools.

OCC: Just want to remind you that I try to use quotation marks to indicate speech and parentheses to indicate thought. Oh, and hi to the visitor. OCC/ "Congratulation, I were just sent by Lady Xerza to assist you in getting the power on, I see I came too late." Maxi laugh at his own joke (nervously). (By all which is blessed by our holy Emperor. She speaks of the machine as it is alive, IN SPIRIT. I truly hope it's just a prayer of the tech-priestess and not a reality.) "Are there any more obstacles before the Maiden is capable of resuming its path?"

Comment from:
The Tech-priests of Mars are a strange lot, given to talking as if machines have souls, or something very close to it. But you're not that deep in the machine mysteries, so you're content with doing the proper rites of maintenance and use. "The power is indeed back on. Blessed be the Machine God. If the ship's remains obedient to my will then we have a hard day's work before us before we are ready to leave the warp. Systems that need calibrating and testing, capacitators that need charging. That sort of thing. So fear not, there will more more than enough to keep you busy."

Comment from:
Xerza on the comm: "Warp-fields are a full capacity again, so I'm ending my vigil. I'll be in the Navigator sanctum, divining a way out of here using the Tarot. Only disturb me if absolutely needed."

Maxi on comm: "Chief, I'll be helping here at engenarium. Send some crew around the ship to get a better damage assessment. Remember to have some of them heavy armed in case of unforeseen obstacles. After the assessment and if it’s advisable stand down the alert." Maxi turns to Venus saying: "I'll do my best, now make me busy."

There are few additional problems; one crew-member is crushed while checking the structural integrity of the areas adjacent to the blowout site, but that's the only major event. Thread ended.
