House of Dust and Ash - Haxtes and Soldevan

by DM B

Timestamp: 6.866.997.M41

Location: Acreage system, Josian Reach, Calixis Sector

Situation: Aboard the Maiden of Golgenna, being briefed by Soldevan

Body: Haxtes' meets with Inquisitor Soldevan in a most unusual location - within the bowels of the eldar assault vessel. The Inquisitor seems to think this is the most private are in the entire fleet. He might be right. He sits across from Haxtes, separated by enough air that any sudden attack would take time to reach him. Pragmatically paranoid. He's pretty hard to read. Not in an inhuman fashion...its just hard to guess what he's thinking.

"It has been a while Haxtes. A while indeed. When last we met I let you go on a hunch. Let us not pretend; I know that you know that I know who and what you are. So as you might infer from that - I am not so puritanical as my reputation would have me be...not a radical by any measure...just accustomed to the realities of the galaxy. Enough so that I gladly seek what lore I can to better combat the enemies of Mankind - but not nearly as much as to use their heretical ways against them. That is a prerogative of my station.

Which brings me to my point; you are not an Inquisitor, you do not have that prerogative. And yet here I find you, and I am left wondering - haw you taken nothing to heart? I had a hunch that you perhaps had the seed of greatness within your soul, but when I look upon it again...it is still lost in the dark, is it not?

If I were to ask you, here and now; 'do you hold faith in the God-Emperor of Mankind', what would you answer then? Feel free not to reply - this is not an interrogation...but if you gave the wrong answer I would still have to put you down. So here you are, still the heretic. Tancred and his radical ways...his crew might accept such deviancy. Indeed they seem to relish the borderline, the insane and the slightly corrupt. But there will come a time of reckoning...

But I digress. Why is it that you cannot bring yourself to His side? I am aware of your rather harsh childhood and your conditioning...but that is no excuse. You are what you choose to be, no more, no less. And if you would continue along the path laid out for you by the Veiled Hand...I must say I'm disappointed. You could be so much more. By the Throne, if it is the blood that you crave, you need look no further - there is no god more terrible and bloody-handed that the one that I serve. No master more harsh or unforgiving that the God-Emperor of Mankind!"

He pauses.

OOC: Since this is a campaign log/blog I'd rather post it here for people to read and enjoy.

Keeping his hands still in his lap, Haxtes looks Soldevan in the eye and smiles. "I feel I have come a long way since we met last. And further more I don't agree that I follow the path of the Hand - you know them and their ways. I have had prey under my knife and let them live on several occasions. Granted I still kill for honor. As for the blood and pain, the world is blood and pain and the sooner one figures that out the easier it gets to stay ahead, helps keep one sane too. I will admit that I do take great pleasure in hurting those that think they have this, for lack of a better expression, "Truth about the world" and think they live by it. All of the rest is just doing my job well Inquisitor."

"Interesting. I see that I am in error. You have come a way. And if you should survive in the survive, perhaps you will go further. I am tempted to call a dare...I pride myself in my ability to read people - no psychics involved - and I am very rarely proven wrong...I dare you to prove me wrong. Become something more than the sum of your past. But enough of this, let us focus on the assignment at hand. Have you heard of the Tyrant Star Haxtes?" He pauses a little, but before you can reply he goes on: "If you have I would have to kill you you see. Most secret and restricted the lore of the Tyrant Star is. But again I jest, and none but myself find it funny. Have you? Heard of the Tyrant Star?"

"I can't say that I have heard of that star."

"Sooner or later you will. So I'll just tell you now and save you the trouble. Perhaps it will also help you in your mission - for what concerns Erasmus Haarlock concerns the Tyrant Star also. There is an entire cabal - the Tyrnatine Cabal - of the Ordo Calixis that pursues the Tyrant Star to the exclusion of everything else. We have many members, but we prefer to work in secret, for our enemies are legion. The Cabal consumes no small part of the resources of the Inquisition in this sector. And for good reason - the Tryant Star is the singular greatest threat to the Calixis sector. Other heresies pale in comparison to one that promises to destroy an entire sector. But for all out resources, for all the centuries spent pursuing the Hereticus Tenebrae, the heretical Prophecy of the Tyrant Star, we know next to nothing of this threat. Save that it is very real and very powerful - potent enough to undo whole worlds by the presence of its dark shadow. It is maddening in the extreme. I have gathered to me some Inquisitors of like mind and set upon a new course that I think hold some promise. It's been done a hundred times before by other Inquisitors of course...a new line of inquiry...a new take on the situation...but this one I feel really hold some promise. Ersmus Haarlock, last scion of the House of Haarlock, has turned out not only to be an eccentric and very vengeful rogue trader. In the centuries since his disappearance - death most probably - the inquisition has figured out something. That Erasums may have come to know more of the Tyrant Star than all of the Tricorn put together. Inquisitor Marr is our foremost expert on Erasmus - and the Haarlocks in general. That's why he'll be your liaison. But there is more. Marr has detected a certain pattern to our Haarlock investigations - a pattern of being led towards an end as yet unknown. I do not like being led by anyone. And this is part of the reason why you are being drawn into this. I need fresh blood, fresh perspectives. And if you can serve as red herrings to draw the attention of whomever is behind it all - that would be a nice bonus."

"We will endeavor to find out what we can on our mission, and follow any leads we find. Do you want us to act as red herrings? Some of us can be real discret if needed, but we can go in to draw attention too. Your call Inquisitor."

"No need to make it any easier for the opposition - they seem well organized, highly intelligent and most well connected. So just go in as Rogue Trader representatives, observe and do whatever it is Marr directs you to do. That is more than sufficient. Just the presence of a new faction will cause whomever else is present to speculate wildly. Marr will have additional details for you once you arrive - what to look for, whom needs special observation, that kind of thing. Here are the contact protocol for getting in touch with him [classified]." He gets up. "One last thing that might be of some personal interest to you. You recent adventures aboard the Twilight has led me to conclude that the Veiled Hand was indeed connected to the Logicians - and that the Logicians and/or Veiled hand has connections to some eldar renegades. The Ordo Xenos suspected as much, but I've never been able to bring myself to truly believe it before now. Your dear mistress Xerza has been informed. And she has sent me some data on an organization called the Serrated Query. I'm not very familiar with it, but I do believe it to be considered some sort of made-up shadowy organizations that criminals and heretics use to scare each other with. It seems, however, that Xerza has become convinced that it is quite real, and that literally everything is somehow connected to them. I'm not convinced, but there you go."
