Baron Hopes - Part 3: Darkness to Darkness, Blood for Blood

by DM B

Timestamp: 7.333.999.M41

Location: Driscol City, Baraspine, Adrantis sub, Calixis sector

Situation: Stalking/being stalked by eldar scouts in the tunnels beneath the underhive

Body: The dark heat beneath thousands of meters of rock and hive would be oppressive in itself were it the dry heat of the rest of Baraspine. But add in a little water and you have a dripping hell more like the saunas the woodcutters of Sepheris Secundus sometimes employ to thaw their frozen bones. Without the suit Haxtes is dripping sweat even when he's at rest.

You can hear Assod's brutes somewhere to your right. Now, if only the eldar would be so obliging...

Topside Maximilian is trying to make the PDF regiment into a coherent strike force. Using the Necromundans as liaisons you're pretty sure it will work out all right.

Haxtes
Alone in the Dark..no no not alone, not alone by a long shot. There is the mutant prey and the xeno predators\ prey and there is Haxtes. Predator and prey in the dark who is who we don't know, all think they are predators and not prey, but Haxtes knows he is both and he likes it. Haxtes smiles and a short spark of malice can be seen in his eyes before all emotion is gone from the dark orbs in the assassin's face. Haxtes activates his psi cloak and moves after the mutants, the xeno will hunt them and Haxtes will hunt the hunters unseen in the dark, the proper way the assassin way, the way of death in the dark. The Xenos will learn the difference between mutants and humans who reek of fear. Not all humans fear the xeno in the dark, the eldar are about to meet a friend of the dark an even older friend of the eldar will meet them too. Death will meet them. Death......death ordained by the Throne granted them by the imperial Nihilator...let the game of death begin.

'All right' is a meaning Maxi has little understanding of. Plan and doctrine on the other hand is well cemented in his mind. Boxing and herding tactics with suppressing grounds, killing squares and containment areas are pointed out on the hive-sector grid map. Instructions are given to the Necromundan "Commissars" and the PDF's are inspected by Maxi's spit and shine antics and drilled in hive-urban riot suppression... sorry, meant hive-urban warfare. Maxi is pretty sure about the outcome and endgame of this mutant root-out, tough he is worried how he and as default the 'Barron of Illeville' will look in the after match.

As Haxtes paws after the mutants, ever vigilant and silent, a great sense of doom settles upon him. The crushing weight of certainty - in his mind Haxtes becomes convinced that there is only one outcome for him if he stays here. Death. Only flight or death remains to him. Haxtes doesn't even consider flight. Death in the service of the Throne - who could want for anything more? The mutants are not so ready to greet the Warp. Many (but not all) turn and flee, without thought for their safety or their comrades. Xenos weapons flash brilliant and accurately, cutting down the fleeing mutants in merciless enfilades. Then forge-world-crafted bolt pistols add to the cacophony. The nearest xeno is torn apart by the mass-reactive shells, his marvelously light and strong armour useless against the adamantine-tipped hypervelocity that slams into his feeble frame. Another eldar avoids instant death, but has one arm blow of at the elbow. The remaining bolts meant for him hit rock, peppering him with fragments and concussion...enough to send him plummeting to his doom among the rocks below his position. Haxtes is already on the move as the xenos return fire. He could have died a dozen times there, but he doesn't. His hair catches fire on his left side from a near-miss, but that i all before he is out of the line of fire, moving and staying hidden. The remaining mutants take heart and fall upon the eldar, turning ambush into a firefight...

The Baraspine PDF units are now in their final staging areas, ready to move out. Forward observers and infiltrators squads have already exfiltrated and spies and informants are feeding a steady stream of data back to HQ. Do you give the go?

OOC: I dont understand the timing I got the imprecision from our last session that the attack was a week or so in the future ? on to business: Haxtes stays in the shadows moving often never firing from the same place or angle, change of location and altitude between shots. Haxtes fells the influence of the cowardly xenos horrid ( but weak) warp craft trying to bring him to hes knees. He activates all hes defenses and will actively try and locate the witch so that it can be dealt with in a way befitting such a exalted creature- about 5 bolts in the head is good way to show humanities feelings towards warp using xeno scum, but Haxtes is willing to give it up to 10 bolts if needed as he is a nice but misunderstood chap.
09/08/11 @ 13:44
Comment from:
OOC: I think I just assumed that when we left off Maxi and Haxtes were about the same timeframe. I may be mistaken though. It does take Maxi longer to assemble and move out the troops than it doe Haxtes to go down deep, so I guess it depends on how you wanted to time it?
09/08/11 @ 19:57
Comment from:
OOC: well Haxtes will want to move up the time frame and hit them hard as they then will have to fight on two fronts, so both timings now work :) But I need to know...if the attack is to start soon Haxtes will stay down deep and raise hell with the eldar, trying to draw them in to a running fight with the mutants. (after getting word to Maxi that they are on to the plan and that he needs to plan for heavy counter attacks.) If the attack is a few days away then Haxtes can play with the eldar and then try to disrupt the rebels c&c before returning top side. ( and informing Maxi that hes attack is expected)

Comment from:
OOC: OK, let's just say that Haxtes' encounter with the Eldar takes place about the time when the PDF starts final muster and preparations. Since they are PDF it will take them some time to reach their staging areas and get the ball rolling. IC: Playing with the eldar is dangerous. Very dangerous indeed. So dangerous that Haxtes would have been deader than Horus had it not been for his mutant 'allies'. They make enough of a ruckus for you to make it - not all of you though. At some point your left pinky goes to the other side, vaporize by a beam of burning energy. After that it become a blur in the deep damp dark. Moving, hiding, firing. Again and again. Pain and fatigue join to suffuse your being with a deep ache of pleasurable agony. Your bolt ammo is long gone, but you've managed to procure a sturdy stub rifle from the claws of a dead mutant. It serves you well - perhaps it i just your steady aim, or maybe because its crude lead bullets have been engraved with runes and sigils of an unholy nature, ultimately it does not matter - taking the life of yet another of the xenos. You try to take his weapon to replace the now-spent rifle - but it is linked to his armour and your power blade is needed to free it. Afterwards it does not fire - leaving your wit blade only (but you keep it anyway, stubborn as you are). All the while strange doubts continue to assail you. The eldar witch trying to worm his way into your mind. Not in the way of a human psyker. Less powerful, but far more insidious. It's not something you can fight against or resist. Sooner or later your will must give in. And perhaps you would indeed have succumbed under other conditions - but your are with Khaine now! Or is it Him-On-Earth? You cannot tell. You only feel a blazing presence at your back - so keep your eyes to the front and trust in your battle-brothers. There is a short lull - and there you see it. Ten steps away is the most wondrously strange creature you have ever beheld - and eldar warlock in all his dark glory. It's alien soul touches upon yours for a moment and you see your fates are intertwined - if you confront it you will both die. If you step back the battle will end and the eldar will depart. Which is it to be? ...at your back Khaine demands blood be spilled! And the Emperor...demands that you smite the foul alien!

..at your back Khaine demands blood be spilled! And the Emperor...demands that you smite the foul alien! and the bastards took my pinkie, that pinkie had been with Haxtes all hes life...and now its gone...killed by a xeno beast who don't care that innocent pinkies die, well this xeno will learn the price for pinkie killing. (Haxtes has not been mortally wounded for weeks now and that fells wrong the xeno will remedy that :)) Haxtes attacks from behind if possible, it may be hard to surprise av xeno witch and when it fails Haxtes will hammer a mental image of Khaine into the xeno, hoping that the xeno will be surprised at that when facing a human opponent. Haxtes will donate a bit of thrones to the needing children of this world to keep the emperor happy and forget this little lapse of faith from hes most humble of servants.

Oh it sees you all right. Or senses you in some other way. Now that you're close you're sure that it is this abomination that's been playing with your mind for a while. It's blade comes up, deftly turning your strike to the side, before executing a perfect riposte that nearly takes your face off (but you manage to duck, or the story would have ended here, and Haarlock would not have liked that). Lacking other options you punch it where it's kidney should be (were it human). Not because you hope for damage, but just to keep it off-balance. The next you know your blade goes flying - but you do manage to dodge its next attack. Lucky you. Oh wait. You ALMOST dodged. You drop prone, blood gushing from a deep tear in your belly. It pauses to look at you then. Like a boy about to stomp on an offending bug. BOOM! The grenade you pinned to the xeno's utility belt goes of, showering everything with alien flesh, blood and pieces of gear.

Haxtes binds hes wound, takes the xeno blade as a trophy and then make hes way topside, when he gets in com range he gets pick up and a medic.
10/09/11 @ 17:22
Comment from:
The xeno has got you good. You manage to stuff most of your parts back inside and make a bandage to hold it in. Its not good tough. You need a medicae and quickly. Slinging the witchblade across your back you grab hold of the non-functional eldar lasrifle and use it as a crutch. Every step is agony. A smile spreads across your face - you can feel the tide of battle turning. With the warlock dead the xenos have lost their will and now they feel with the mutants at their heels. Victory is yours.
10/09/11 @ 21:18
Comment from:
Haxtes sits down in the middle of the dead Xeno, and loosen the bindings of hes wounds. He lays back and wait to be rescued by the mutants after they have run of the last xeno`s . Haxtes gives a silent thanksgiving to the Emperor for guiding the blade into him, wounding him at hes moment of triumph. Haxtes just understood the thrones plan, how else can he infiltrate the leadership of the mutants ? How else can he get close to the filth that try to blot out the light of holy Terra on this planet ? Haxtes needs a reason to meet them, this is it. a mortal wound given by the xeno witch as Haxtes killed it and saving the day. Haxtes grunts in pain and wispers: "Oh its good to loved"
10/12/11 @ 20:03
Comment from:
Being loved is also quite painful and involves a considerable blood loss. But your plan does have some merit. Before you are altogether dead the mutants find you and carry you to (relative) safety...
10/21/11 @ 09:46
Comment from:
Haxtes is taken...somewhere and cared for. But given the severity of his wounds he is unconscious much of the time, coming around only once in a while before the black curtain descends once more. But you are close to your prey now - you can feel it in your blood!
10/25/11 @ 13:38
Comment from:
Haxtes wakes. How long has passed you do not know - only that you've been out for a while. You're still underground though, deep underground. The heat and oppressive weight of stone around you is a dead giveaway. You're in a bed. One of those foldable army beds that officers use in the field. Made surprisingly comfortable by a mix of blankets and animal furs. You're weak and light-headed, but a quick aestimation of your own body reveals you are no longer mortally wounded. You have been healed and cared for. An old crone attends to your needs. She's either a mutant or so old and wrinkled that she looks like one. When you come around she senses the change in your demeanor and alerts a guard outside the chamber. You fade into semi-consciousness again, but clarity eventually returns - to reveal a man of some importance sitting on a field chair next to your bed. He is impressive both in the physical sense and by the presence that wraps around him - presence akin to that possessed by men of stature and fine breeding. He is somewhat elderly, but is age has worn his physique somewhat it has only added to his aura of command. Baron Ulbrexis: "You have returned to the land of the living young one. That is good - you danced on the edge of the vortex for a long time. My healer almost thought you beyond her power to save, but clearly a power greater than hers intervened. Praise be given to the true Master. I am Baron Havalir Saerton Ulbrexis, of the world of Sepheris Secundus. Chances are you've heard of it, but few non-Sepherians ever have the misfortune of setting foot there. But I digress. You are something of a mystery to my staff here. And they react poorly to the unknown. So let us together dispel their fears. So good sir...it is time you talked..."
11/28/11 @ 19:36
Haxtes
"Yes Baron lets talk...I have always liked a good talk..but if I may have a glass of water first to lubricate my mouth ?" Haxtes compose him self and checks hes body status
11/28/11 @ 20:11
Comment from:
The crone appears from somewhere to present Haxtes with a cup of water. The liquid is warm and stale. Haxtes is weak and the flesh where he was mortally wounded is still tender, but otherwise he feels fine. Food, water and exercise should see him as good as new.

I`m the happy camper that saved your lot of freedom fighters from the eldar, I`m a friend of freedom as it is not happy to stand idly by and watch them get there hearts handed to them. As for my name, you can call me Ezekiel if you like"

Comment from:
"Ezekiel, eh? It'll do. So Ezekiel, you've already made and impression with Assod, and your fight with the eldar makes me rather inclined to be impressed myself. Still doesn't really answer why you were down here now, at this moment, and why you were so eager to fight the xenos. I my experience there are few who have the guts - no pun intended on behalf of your injury - to face them."
12/05/11 @ 22:35
Comment from:
"no big secret that, no profit in fear. I fight them all, xeno, man don't mater to me. Assod is a good man I like to think that hes enemy's are worth fighting from time to time"
12/05/11 @ 22:39
Comment from:
Baron Ulbrexis: "You have certainly made an impression on Assod. That's not an easy thing to do. Raze too for that matter - I think she's taken a liking to you. I am tempted to like you myself - I have a soft spot for anything or anyone of Protasian origin. I spent much of my youth there you see. As a younger son I was ward ' hostage if you will - to one of my father's many debtors. How fortunate I was. I may be Sepherian by birth - but I'm a Protasian by choice. Ezekiel...you are interested in profit, yes? Although I'm not much for profit-seeking myself I can understand the motivation. More importantly; from you past actions it would seem that our goals are not entirely dissimilar. Or should I say the goals of your master, the esteemed Baron, Rogue Trader Jax Guilliman?" Obviously waiting for a reaction from Haxtes that doesn't come the Baron goes on, smiling: "There is no witchery involved, just some cold logic. Your work to have the Princess returned...your connections with First Minister Ulmin Drey...it points strongly in one direction. You work for the Rogue Trader. And the honorable Jax Guilliman is interested in profit...while not rocking the establishment too much. As the Baron surely knows there is an Arbitrator-Auditor coming to review the tithe, and one would not want there to be too much commotion. Might attract unwanted...Imperial...attention. And that won't be good for profit."
01/10/12 @ 10:54
Comment from:
Pause for thought; continues: "It's been entirely too much strife of late. The Princess was not supposed to run away and thereby jeopardize the First Minister's position. It was very unfortunate, very unfortunate indeed. It forced us to change the timetable, adapt and overcome. Sometimes new opportunities reveal themselves during times of hardship... I'm not making much sense am I? This is what happens when I spend too much time around Assod and his likes - no use talking to them. So Ezekiel, is you master interested in making great profit? Greater than what would ever be possible under the current regime? Would he like to increase his income five times over, ten times, even more? If you think he does then we've something to discuss."
01/10/12 @ 11:00
Comment from:
"We do indeed have something to discuss Baron, unwanted Imperial...attention is never good for profit. Whomever I work for, I can't really confirm that. But you seem like a perceptive man and I don't want to insult you by making tall tales."
01/10/12 @ 15:35
Comment from:
"New management is needed on Baraspine...and quickly....for very soon an Arbitrator-Auditor will arrive on Baraspine. He's here for the tithe books of course. But he will also be looking into things that might affect future tithe generation. We must show him that Baraspine could be more than it is today under new management. A new Governor that could deliver significantly higher tithes. It's a difficult balance to be sure - we would not want to appear to be able to give too much...just enough so that there will be no trouble over the change in management. But the Governess have hit us rather hard of late - her men have suddenly gotten both spines and tactical know-how...there is talk of a giant armored off-worlder directing the troops...and off-worlder liaisons accompanying the troops. Then perhaps your nameless master would be capable of gathering some support - perhaps some of his peers are also interested in profit. Perhaps he has the ear of the armored giant. Perhaps he has other resources as well. New management means new opportunities...for profit. Great profit, for all of us."
01/11/12 @ 09:37
Comment from:
" new management is needed but it will have to be new or The goverment of Terra wil take a hard intrest in it, right ? The curent regime is coruppt and ineficent and lead by mutants. the new powers are unknown as to corupption and efficency but it does have a nice grouping of mutants. It is our understanding of the Terran regime that a bit of curupption and ineffecency is expected and not struck down on. Mutants and xeno-eldar in the basment lvls however seem to atraced a lot of Terrans with b ig guns and bad attitudes towards all- even profit and fredom loving gentelmen. So to get to the point Baron: Do you have a plan to keep profits flowing and the eye of Terra looking somewhere more deserving ?"
01/11/12 @ 15:49
Comment from:
Baron Ulbrexis: "There was a plan involving the current government; one where the young Princess took over - following the untimely death of her mother - in time to turn the tables on the insurrectionists and show a good tithe figure. But given recent developments that's out of the question... But First Minister Drey is still out there. If he were to take a more active role in things, resurface so to say. He could make a very good governor. He has the right progressive ideas, without being a mutant, nor a heretic. The current Governor and her daughter would have to go of course...perhaps that is something your secret master could arrange? And I'd need to see Drey. Or at least have messages ferried back and forth. Doable? Oh, and the xenos broke and ran after you killed their warlock. They may be out there still, but they won't be so bold again. Not inside the hive."
01/12/12 @ 10:39
Comment from:
"...yes, yes. There are altogether too many mutants. But the planet is chocked with them, so one must work with what one has. And a mutant that thinks himself fortunate is much easier to control than a rabid one. There will be more for them too...not much, but when you have nothing even a little will feel like a fortune. And when they have a stake in the profits they'll start contributing, making everyone else all that much richer in the process."
01/12/12 @ 10:42
Comment from:
" As for good mr Drey all is doable, and as for the curent regime a removal can be arranged if its the best way to go. That is for my master to deside, with you and mr Drey." Sorry for the delay; had a massive puke-o-rama this weekend :-( --- Baron Ulbrexis: "Yes, yes, a meeting is good. I would very much like to meet your master in person, to see what kind of man he is. Not many men have the greatness of vision to both serve Terra and make a profit - but if anyone can it will be a Rogue Trader! The sooner we can meet the better. The auditor will be here soon, and we have not time to waste. If I gain his support I am sure we can transform Baraspine from a poor backwater into a shining beacon of loyalty, piety, and production. And the sooner that happens, the sooner I can be on my way...there are so many places that need inspiration to move forward into the glorious 42nd Millennium!" The Baron gets very agitated when speaking of things like profit and progress. It is not difficult to understand why many would listen to him. He is also very eager to meet with RT Jax. He'd go there straight away if he could, but Assod Morirr insists upon security and a neutral meeting ground. Ulbrexis finds his concerns vexing; if something should happen to him someone else will take his place. He is not so important as Assod thinks. But Assod isn't having any of that. He suggests a meeting on neutral ground over in Driscol, the 'spire' where Illeville is located. It's out-of-the-way and not as chaotic as the main hive these days. What sayeth Ezekiel?
01/18/12 @ 10:47
Comment from:
Nothing like a good old puke-o-rama, medical or alcohol ? Haxtes fells that Assod is putting hes nose in where it does not belong but thats hes job so Haxtes guess he will have to forgive him. A neutral meeting is fine for Ezekiel but he needs to clear the time and location with hes master before they can meet. " Do not be angry with your servant, Its is good of Assod to be prudent my dear Baron, he would be doing you a great disservice if he did not advice you to protect your person it is at times a cruel and deadly galaxy we live in, it is know that to remember that is to live longer" " I ramble my Baron I dont mean to tell you have to run your own house its just that I fill a similar function to my master. I`l need to get back home to communicate this meeting in person we dont make use of vox for important messages. I send word with conformation as soon as I have spoken with my master."

No alcohol or drugs were involved; just some good ole' viruses getting picked up in kindergarten and then spread around the house. Good thing we have several toilets and bathrooms and buckets and a big-ass washing machine! --- Haxtes is most forgiving...you'll find that his master is much less forgiving :-P Haxtes takes his leave to go and arrange stuff. Ulbrexis urges him to hurry, or the opportunity will be squandered. Haxtes makes sure he's not followed, not outside the underhive anyway, then presumably heads back home, or does he have any other stops first? At any rate; as he ascends to more civilized parts of the hive there are signs of battle, vandalism and good old looting everywhere. There are fewer people about than usual and they seem more wary than normal. Haxtes learns that he's been out of circulation for the better part of two weeks - and what he is seeing is the aftermath Maxi's great offensive and the many skirmishes that followed thereafter. It must have been very bloody for both sides; but there is a certain satisfaction to be had from it, for it is clear that the house militias did indeed fight very well, and that the insurgents were not able to just evade and ambush. Having an old Arbitrator in charge and Necromundan veterans as liaisons have certainly tipped the scales - or at least balanced out the odds.

Maxi stands when reporting. "The Baraspine PDF executed the Driscol Hive operation, the operation was... "as adequate" as ordered. Enough mutant kills and prisoners to justify the means, not as decisive as to destroy other options. Prisoners gave no vital information, our losses was diminutive... I mean the Baron's loss were diminutive. The PDF had the estimated 55% casualty. I see no reason to not continue our cause with the Auditor."

Comment from:
" Thats good Maximilian, keep up the pressure on them. A fresh offensive is needed soon to get the rebels more desperate to get help from us"
01/19/12 @ 21:09
Comment from:
The rest of your cadre deliver their reports: The situation in the capital is very tense, but the royalists seem to have the upper hand. Given time the rebellion will be crushed; but the cost is high, and it's a good chance that there will be problems meeting the tithe quota. Driscol Spire is blessedly quiet, and with your secondary spaceport/aeroport you are not really feeling much of the troubles besetting the main hive. Stone reports that there have been attempts by the rebels to infiltrate the spire, but thus far they have been 'turned back'. There are rumors of trouble on the northern hemisphere as well, but you have little information. Could be rebellious mutants there too, or it could be the local rulers trying to break free of the current Governor's influence. If the later that could mean a full civil war. Space is relatively quiet. One Mechanicus conveyor-ship has been in orbit for almost six weeks. While you were out of commission a navy detachment called in; a Fydae patrol of one Dauntless CL and two Sword FFs. Nothing new from Ulmin Drey. He's been thoroughly interviewed and processed. He remains in custody and is of relative good physical health. Somewhat mentally traumatized, but not critically. The girl Eisha has been making more drawings. Mostly hive-scenes (presumably from Baraspine's ancient history) and images of eldar xenos. The xenos drawing may be contemporary; they show Eldar skulking about - and there is a scene of Haxtes fighting an eldar warlock. Haxtes is in his armor, but otherwise the scene is very reminiscent of what happened in the underhive.

The plot thickens... --- ULBREXIS Haxtes' cadre (has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?) sets about arranging for a meeting with Baron Ulbrexis and his friends. It will be a backstab of course. Comment from:
THE REBELLION, THE GENERAL-ADJUTANT AND THE GOVERNESS' GUARDS Maxi is to continue pushing the rebels. They will not be allowed to make any major gains over the coming weeks (if it can be helped). They are not to be completely crushed, but must remain strong enough to be a credible (but easily crushed at a later date) threat. One must recognize that an enemy pushed into a corner could do desperate things...so better not make them that desperate. Maxi is also to set up what will appear to be a 'final battle'. he will allow Count Mallear, General-Adjutant to the Governess, the honor of leading the final push against the rebels. Something like that anyway. The point is that the General will be killed by the rebels in a most unfortunate ambush/counterattack. If need be he'll be assassinated - he is NOT to get out alive. This will out Maxi in a position where he can extend his influence into the ranks of the Governess' own Guards. It will be important later. Oh, and the General-Adjutant is a heretic - aiding and abetting a known mutant, conspiracy against the Throne, the list is longer, but that second item there...shooting offense!
02/08/12 @ 11:40
Comment from:
BISHOP NICODEMUS The Bishop of Skaltine (who likes to style himself 'Archbishop') is another heretic. He's guilt of the same crimes as Count Mallear. And for those reasons he will have a fatal accident. Incidentally he is also one of those that are in the know about Princess Mayzins unfortunate condition (and no, she's not pregnant, she's a MUTANT!).

Actually...he's not entirely sound of the mind anymore; repeated interrogation has worn him down a bit. But his body has mostly recovered from the ordeals. He'll be brought along to the Ulbrexis meeting. it will look good. But he'll be equipped with a dead-man 'switch' of some sort, so that if he should, Throne forbid, get away his freedom will be short-lived indeed.

KEPHISTRON More than half a world away the powers-that-would-be are rumbling on the northern continent of Kephistron. They are none too fond of the rule of Skaltine...if the Governess becomes too weak they may try to rebel and reclaim their long-lost hegemony over Baraspine. This must be avoided or the plan will become irrelevant...

IMPERIAL NAVY PATROL The Navy will be given permission to 'recruit' from the Kephistron region. Seeing as how Skaltine is in no state to receive them. Will make the Navy Commodore happy and antagonize the uppity Kephistrans a bit (wholly deserved).

CODENAME MAIDEN The young girl has grown a bit...it's been three years after all...hear aestimated age was around 10 at the time, give or take, which puts her at about 13 now. She is, by design, kept away from the population at large - access to her person is strictly limited. She's been given an education in select fields, mostly to keep her occupied. Other than that she's left mostly alone - you've refrained from 'testing' her in any particular way. Haxtes is no expert on these things, but he's sure she's some form of psyker. Just not a regular kind. Exotic enough that a veteran Daemon Hunter couldn't tell her nature (or maybe he just pretended not to know?). At any rate; she's growing into a young woman, and her powers are clearly growing as well.

It all looks good, if the nobles of Kephistron don't feel suppressed by Imperial naval recruiting then well one of the ring leaders may need to die and be found with an ]I[ cut into his forehead. Haxtes doesn't want to do that as it will show them that the Throne sees them and show them that the Throne is here. But if it's needed for them to stay quiet it will be done.

THE HOUSE OF TURIN What's there to say? The entire household is thoroughly corrupt and heresy seems endemic. It will have to go. All of it. A last desperate attack by the rebels that overruns the Governor's compound and wipes out everything and everyone. Only to be suitably counterattacked and destroyed by Maxi and his merry men.

ULBREXIS Well well well, it all hinges on this one, doesn't it? A location is agree to. A time is agree to. There are some changes to these agreements. Finally it goes down. Haxtes-as-Jax meets with Baron Ulbrexis. You have a few good men, he has a few good men. You have more men (or Stone if you like) scattered about, he has more (well Assod has is probably more accurate) scattered about. You've brought Ulmin Drey with you - he's a broken man, and ultimately of low value. But it looks good bringing him. To their credit it is YOUR people that make the first move. A coordinated strike from Stone's men on the rebel's sentinels. Sudden, swift and merciless. The mutants are big and bad, but they lack important stuff like voxes and cohesion. They start dying silently. The next phase doesn't go as smoothly. Killing the witch Raze is of course a top priority...but she doesn't really want to be killed. She doesn't even want any attempted-killings. She must have screwed with Haxtes while he was out, because as soon as you even think of taking her out you're down. It's pain like nothing you've experienced before (well, that might be an exaggeration...but it's bad). But it's not just the pain - your nerves are literally burning inside your body... ...more tomorrow!

THE REBELLION, THE GENERAL-ADJUTANT AND THE GOVERNESS' GUARDS Maxi acts outwardly of the Barons interest. Any corruptions has been noted earlier as a probably conspiracy against the Holy Emperor and is in this fluid of events, void. (To be dealt with later at the appropriate time. Or as stated earlier of the General.) As of notable actions Maxi is commending soldiers for bravery by awarding medals and bonuses from his own hand. (The baron has deep pockets) (If possible these PDF soldiers are promoted to squad-guards with Maxi's liaison troops. (Necromundia) or even Maxi's OWN.

ULBREXIS Whatever the mutants' plans were they certainly went to the Eye when Stone's people (which includes such notables as Ignace and Odessa) started killing. Anything after that is purely reaction. I'm also sure they had a cunning plan with Haxtes' head, but in this case it was triggered more by accident than design. The fight that follows is quick, but fierce. Ulbrexis' little group of personal bodyguard are all tough mutants, but you've got some tough customers on your side too. Jarra and her chainsword for example. At any rate; people - and mutants - die, but you live. The witch, Raze, is able to get away, but she's the only enemy to do so. She bursts into flames and then summons a hellish inferno a flames and warp energy. That sort of puts an end to the fight and Jarra switches to a new strategy; repay the nice Haxtes by carrying him to safety. As an added bonus she drags Ulbrexis with her. A good woman is a strong woman! Stone's people also get away clean; they were never in any real danger, operating on a relatively safe distance. Ulmin Drey is a dead man. He got away in the confusion of the fight, and as per instructions he was remotely terminated by a cranial bomb or some such. As for Assod Morir he is also dead - shot multiple times by Stone's marksmen and hacked down by Jarra near the end of the fight. Plus consumed by warp-fire. Mission accomplished. It went as well as could be hoped.

FATE POINT NOTE (TO ALL PLAYERS) Had we been playing PnP this scene and the one with the Warlock would both be, as written, typical 'spend-a-Fate-Point' moments. But in a PnP setting things might have played out very differently - so therefore I'm loathe to fool around with Fate Point during PbP play. Exception: If you do something really silly or end up in a situation where clearly there is no way out you'll still be docked a FP. But not in situations like this where I write you into a deadly spot just because it makes for a cool scene.

CODENAME MAIDEN Haxtes injuries are crippling, possibly fatal even. Not having a working nervous systems will, at best, require lengthy and extensive cybernetic work. It is discussed whether or not Interrogator Sand (who is a leading cybernetic surgeon) should be contacted. In the event his services are not needed; Haxtes is placed in the Inquisition compound that lies in Illeville's sub-levels. It's the most advanced medical suite available around these parts (the equipment was stripped from the Maiden). Incidentally this is also Codename Maiden's haunt. She has very limited freedom of movement, but she's allowed to wander a little. So she pops by Haxtes a few times, spending time...looking at him. On the second or third such visit she has some for of seizures. She is quickly cared for by the staff - she has, quite unexplainable, suffered massive neural trauma. Haxtes opens his eyes shortly thereafter...

IMPERIAL NAVY PATROL The young, but very promising Rogue Trader Jax Guilliman, Baron of Illeville, greets Commodore George Rooke on his high-spire landing pad - once cannot have such distinguished guests trudging through the lower levels. He seems rather young for the post, but he seems very solid nonetheless. After some time it becomes clear that he's not a Calixian, but that he hails from Segmentum Solar. That's not so special - there are plenty of officer families from Segmentum Solar. What IS special is that he's not from such a family, but is common born (relatively anyway, he was able to entry a Navy academy and get a commission...so not exactly lower classes). Wishing to see the frontiers he volunteered for duty in the Margin Worlds Crusade - and now he's here, a Commodore in charge of a Fydae Patrol Squadron. Baraspine is a typical staging point for such patrols. So he's here to fill up his stores, final adjustments and a short shore leave for the officers. That sort of thing. He's also here to gather intelligence on the local situation; the Administratum has heard that there have been...trouble. So far he hasn't seen anything worthwhile to report...but the Rogue Trader might have something to add about the situation in the Capital?

IMPERIAL NAVY PATROL One thing leads to another and Haxtes finds himself 'reluctantly' answering a lot of questions regarding the situation in the capital. Nothing incriminating against his liege of course, but still...hard to explain why low born criminals would attack an APC column with missile launchers...and answering such questions jut leads to other questions... ...in the end the Commodore understands why he was not invited to see the Governor, why he was sent to Kephistron for his recruitment drive. It will go into his report. Along with something positive about Jax Guilliman and the Countess Datar - who seem to be the only ones keeping the Emperor's peace around these parts. After that it's mostly chit-chat. Places you've been - a Navy Captain and a Rogue Trader have been places. A bit trick that, but the galaxy is a big place, and you've been around a bit. The one where the General-Adjutant will gain glory and death. It works like a charm. Count Mallear leads Baraspine's finest on a final bloody push into the heart of rebel underhive turf. It is clear that he and his men have learned much of Maxi. It is a sad moment when a rebel sniper puts a spread of heavy bolt shells through his chest. The mutant responsible is never found, but there are men that swear that he was a big fucker. Must have been to carry a heavy bolter! THE HOUSE OF TURIN The quandary with the House of Turin resolves itself - after a fashion. As you know the Raze woman got away. You've been trying to locate her, without any luck. But now you know - she's been preparing payback time. She must have been assuming that the Governess was behind the double-cross for she strikes even as Haxtes and the other nobles are gathered for a great victory celebration. She's got a hard cadre of mutants and heretics with her, but they are more of a diversion, something to cause a distraction so she can get inside...and work her wyrd-fire. It's a spectacular and horrifying display of psychic power, a raging inferno that burns and corrupts with equal abandon...anyone standing in her way dies, no exceptions...those that can flee do so. Jax/Haxtes sort of hangs back, trusting in his stealth, concealed armour, force field, and psychic wards to keep him alive and only medium crisp. The Governess tries to flee, but is stabbed to death by her own mutant daughter. Poetic justice of sorts. Tamzin Turin then follows Raze out of the burning palace - and into the arms of Maxi's waiting reinforcements. The attack may have caught old Maxi off-guard, but his riposte is second to none. Tamzin dies in a hail of fire - Raze just conjures more wyrd-fire and wades into the guards. This is the opportune moment Haxtes has been waiting for. Blessed bolt shells, each containing a near-priceless anti-pisonic charge, leap out of his gun, races across the distance and...blam, blam, blam. Not just one, but three shells make it through the sorcerous inferno and detonates inside the psyker woman's skinny body. Immediately her witch-fire flares even more brilliantly, shimmers for a moment, then boom, a massive backlash of energy. Those standing too close die, many more are burned (and give the nature of those burns...should be checked upon). Haxtes is too close (as he is wont to be), but his protective measure are sufficient; slightly well done, but alive. His wargear is in need of some serious love from a Tech-priest though!

BARASPINE GENERAL With the head of government and many of her closet nobles out of commission there is something of a power vacuum. It leads, predictably, to unrest, looting, feuding, and whatnot. For Skaltine there is a saving grace - the real reels have been destroyed and the Household Troops greatly depleted. That limits the violence somewhat. Lacking a strong Adeptus presence (the Arbites lock down the main spaceport, but it's mostly a gesture) Skaltine reverts to elder ways, it's people becoming ever more insular and oriented towards, family, fief and shadow guilds.

Hostile fighter craft taking of from the southern Descrayne base and trying to gun down the God-Emperor's own servant! Fortunately they were intercepted and shot down by the Navy squadrons stationed in Driscol City. A fools errand really; the Commodore's ships must have had the rebels pinned from the moment they lifted of and then it was just a turkey shoot. SILON'S OBSERVATIONS Over some fine amasec Silon mentions that he's been out to the 'Navy Base' and had a look. He's of the strong opinion that the fighter crews doesn't really belong to the Fydae Patrol. First of all a Dauntless Cl isn't much of a carrier. Oh sure, he could stuff in some fighters, but to what purpose? When going out into the great unknown on a long patrol? Unlikely. He thinks they come from the Q-ship currently sitting up there in high orbit. Note how it's positioned just so that it fits neatly into the Navy coverage of Baraspine - if she's bristling with hidden weapons. Silon is willing to bet his commission on it.

IMPERIAL NAVY PATROL/TYRANTINE CABAL It's more or less confirmed. The freighter is a Q-ship - a merchantman filled with guns and shields and whatnot, ostensibly indistinguishable from a normal trading vessel. A big surprise to any would-be-pirate. The Navy uses them sometimes. Oh, and Silon is sure the Navy is looking for xenos raider. Or Eldar marauders as they are also known. So they do do know SOMETHING, but clearly not all the details.

IMPERIAL NAVY PATROL/TYRANTINE CABAL Good nothing like a little top cover from the fly boys. Haxtes will then wait until a ship arrives that he can safely depart inn.

IMPERIAL NAVY PATROL/TYRANTINE CABAL The next ship to arrive in-system is the Maiden. It's something of surprise to you, since you've not had any word from her in many weeks. Reason; Xerza took astropath Messinus with her to the surface of Quaddis, leaving the Maiden with a single astropath. And said astropath suffered an incident and committed suicide once he realized he had been morally compromised. Such is the strength of those soul-bonded to the Emperor that they would rather kill themselves than betray Him. Leaving Quaddis the Maiden continued its journey, but was incapable of gaining the services of a skilled enough astropath. Which was unfortunate, but not crippling, so she continued her mission and now she's here. The navy would probably have liked to keep her in high orbit along with the Q-ship, but the Maiden is a Rogue Trader vessel - the Navy can't simply order her around.

IMPERIAL NAVY PATROL/TYRANTINE CABAL Haxtes meets with Xerza, and gives her a full report and hes recomendations for promotions. Haxtes maytell her of hes plans concering the child if he sense her to be in a reciving mood.

IMPERIAL NAVY PATROL/TYRANTINE CABAL Xerza is not on the Maiden. She is still of Quaddis with Messinus and a few others, investigating a Haarlock lead. Which is good as it would otherwise ruin your master plan!

Well Ruin? not so sure :-) But it means that Haxtes can go and start the first part of the plan.

Question is: Do you kill two heretics with one bolt shell and take the Maiden with you aboard the Maiden? The ship will drop you off somewhere along the way and then do a few stops before you meet again over Corax. Does that sound like a plan?

You could even stick some cadre members on board the Maiden to be sure things don't go to the Eye while you are away.

You mean in addition to the usual selection of long-las, splinter pistol, bolt pistol, power blade, grenades etc.? A demi-lance or two? Some macro-cannon batteries? Having a big gun never hurts!

Comment from:
Yes in addition to those, not including the poisons, sharp stick and all the other Diplomacy 40k style stuff.
